Six The Musical, an empowering reimagining of six iconic queens
Henry VIII’s ex-wives finally get the spotlight they deserve in this historical reimagining. Experience the ultimate pop concert as Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr tell you their stories in a series of girlband-esque performances. Six features an all-female cast and all-female band with a score that takes inspiration from pop superstars, such as Adele, Ariana Grande, Avril Lavigne, Jessie J, and more.
What is Six The Musical about?
Six tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII like you've never heard before. It brings the queens - Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr — right into the 21st century with a score that includes power ballads, techno beats, and absolute anthems for an unforgettable lesson in history and girl power. There are plenty of incredibly catchy songs by writing team Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, including “Get Down,” “All You Wanna Do,” and “Haus of Holbein” — a techno-infused song based on the German painter.
Why do people love Six The Musical?
We're familiar with the rhyme from history class: divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. But we never had the opportunity to learn much more about the lives of Henry VIII’s infamous wives. Six is a bold reimagining that delves into their stories with a diverse cast, contemporary references, catchy songs, sparkling costumes, and a heavy dose of female empowerment. The musical is perfect for those who only have time for a short show, with a run time of 75 minutes.
In a review on London Theatre, our critic raves: “Mixing pop concert with theatre, it's a big, joyful welcome to non-traditional audiences and in particular to younger ones, who eagerly whip out their phones to record the finale; rather than fearing social media, Six rules it. It's the jolt of energy that the West End needs.”
Who wrote Six the Musical?
Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss wrote Six the Musical in their final year at Cambridge University. They then took their show to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, returning the following year. The pair won a Tony Award for their Six music at the 2022 ceremony.
