The Concert
Beethoven’s celebratory music opens this concert, the opening night of the Beethovenfest Bonn, paving the way for Anton Bruckner’s monumental, visionary symphonic statement.
The Music
In the first half, Beethoven’s music for the reopening of a Viennese theatre meets Stefan Behrisch’s commissioned work, a fanfare for the magnificent Klais organ and 14 trumpeters positioned throughout the hall.
Bruckner may have left his Symphony No 9 incomplete, but it still serves as a summation of his life. The overwhelming Adagio stands as the work’s emotional, even religious, heart, while the pounding Scherzo is among the most bombastic and inspiring of anything Bruckner conceived.
Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor of the LSO, summons the Orchestra’s full might for this grand symphonic celebration.
